Why Japanese Denim Is Chosen by the World

The Mecca of Denim
Japanese denim such as our JUMBO 14.5oz DENIM.Why is Japanese denim so deeply needed and demanded by the world? It is because Japanese denim delivers the world’s highest level of consistency supported by the fine instincts of Japanese artisans.
The Bitchu and Bingo region centering around Ibara City is widely celebrated as the sacred land of denim. Since ancient times this area thrived as a major hub for cotton textile industries famous for traditional Bitchu Kasuri and Bingo Kasuri fabrics. The deep-rooted expertise in cotton yarn spinning with indigo dyeing and loom weaving within this local community established the perfect foundation for modern Japanese denim production.
Especially after World War II when jeans culture arrived from America, these textile weavers shifted to producing heavy-duty cotton fabrics for denim. This historic pivot caused a concentrated survival of vintage shuttle looms in Ibara and Fukuyama. This precise weaving process serves as the vital beating heart that determines the peerless quality of Japanese denim.

Japanese Denim: The Global Pinnacle Supported by True Artisanship
Japanese artisans utilize these vintage shuttle looms with decades of experience and deep expertise. Through this master skill they can consistently supply surprisingly uniform and high-quality denim fabric even from old-school machinery. This absolute reliable consistency stands as the definitive strength of Japanese denim.
This exceptional craftsmanship is only possible in Japan. Our artisans cherish these vintage shuttle looms and pass down their peerless wisdom and technical skill through generations. This continuous heritage enables a level of manufacturing that no other country can replicate.
Because Japanese people deeply cherish their vintage tools and machinery, these classic shuttle looms remain active today. The richly textured selvedge denim woven on these machines becomes a true vintage-style textile that no other country can replicate.
This unmatched consistency is exactly why Japanese denim receives such high praise from luxury brands worldwide.
The Origins of Japanese Jeans and the Dedicated Denim Yarn JUMBO

JUMBO 14.5oz DENIM stands as our original custom fabric developed by STRASSBURGER through a thorough pursuit of true vintage texture and beautiful fading.
This JUMBO 14.5oz denim utilizes a highly specialized yarn originally created more than 50 years ago specifically for denim production.
Japan’s First Dedicated Denim Yarn JUMBO
The JUMBO yarn was developed more than 50 years ago by Ayabe Spinning Co. Ltd. in Ayabe City Kyoto as the very first yarn in Japan dedicated exclusively to denim production.
The JUMBO 14.5oz DENIM is the exact fabric woven using this historic first dedicated denim yarn.
The Jumbo Spinning Machine was engineered specifically to eliminate yarn breakage issues during the weaving process of that era by winding more than five times the volume of standard spinning bobbins.

The yarn spun by this Jumbo Spinning Machine creates a natural uneven slub texture that is nearly impossible to replicate with modern high-tech spinning equipment to deliver that indispensable vintage look and feel for denim.
This natural slub texture born from the traditional technology of that era serves as the perfect yarn uniquely suited for a fabric like denim which is crafted to fade beautifully.
The JUMBO yarn was developed more than 50 years ago specifically to produce authentic domestic denim. As the very first yarn built exclusively for denim within Japan this JUMBO thread represents a legendary material that stands as the true origin of Japanese jeans.
In addition we utilize brown cotton for the weft yarn to guide the colors that appear during fading toward a much stronger vintage character.
Original Fabric JUMBO 14.5oz Denim
Our Original JUMBO 14.5oz DENIM Woven on Vintage Shuttle Looms

The JUMBO 14.5oz selvedge denim crafted on vintage shuttle looms that fly wooden shuttles back and forth at low speeds using our dedicated JUMBO yarn creates the perfect moderate unevenness essential for jeans and delivers that vintage style fading that modern projectile looms can never replicate.
Vintage shuttle looms capable of weaving only a few meters per hour with a narrow fabric width stand as highly inefficient machines in the modern era of mass production.
Yet our artisans adjust and keep running these vintage shuttle looms because they deliver a richly textured denim that can only be built on old school machinery.
The JUMBO 14.5oz DENIM woven on vintage shuttle looms utilizing our signature JUMBO yarn with a perfect moderate unevenness stands as far more than just a simple denim fabric because it represents the continuous heritage of Japanese craftsmanship designed to let you experience the absolute joy and true essence of jeans.
